COOL COIN SHOWCASE, #9, July 30, 2026

Half Dimes R Us

Hi Folks,

I have a passion for half dimes. It is still something I personally collect and I am striving to obtain a box of 20 across the whole range of pre-Civil War varieties. It all started when I was a kid in the 60s. An AG Liberty Seated Half Dime was all I could afford at the coin shop with my allowance and chore money. It was the oldest coin I owned at that time. I don't remember the date, probably something in the 1870s or 1880s that was one of the most common ones but it is long gone now. Jump to 2004 when I decided to start collecting again. I bought a raw AU 1847 half dime, nice and shiny and almost blast white on ebay, my first coin of my new collecting era. When I accumulated 5, I sent them all off to PCGS for grading. This one came back 'cleaned' and in a 'body bag'. I then sent it to ANACS and it came back Net AU50 details. But ANACS also attributed it and it was a Repunched 1 variety. So even though I learned a good lesson about buying raw coins, something good came out of it as it sparked my interest in varieties. From that point on I only bought slabbed and graded coins and accumulated about a dozen or so Capped Bust and Liberty Seated half dimes. When I sold alot of my collection in 2019, all of these went away. My wife wanted me to collect big coins not these tiny ones...... So they went off. Since, when a really cool piece has turned up, hey I bought it anyway. I guess it all goes back to the impression that AG LS Half Dime made on me as a kid.

But this half dime journey has helped me learn about the different series and types. In this CCS, we offer 4 half dimes of different types, each personally selected for the kind of quality that I would want in my own half dime collection. As usual, you can click on each image below and it will take you to the listing on the DM website.

Finally, just a reminder of at least one more Newsletter pre-ANA in Pittsburgh, where I will highlight some of the really cool coins that will be at the Desert Moon table. Also, at the table will be a group of very high end and uber pq coins from an advanced collector, more on this in the Pre-Show Newsletter.

As always, thanks for reading and your interest.

Best, DM
