The Big Show Is Next Week!
Hi Folks,
Yup it is that time of the year. The Big Kahuna of Numismatic Events. The Summer ANA Convention. This one has everything, lots of educational activities, workshops, club meetings, talks, rarities on display, collector exhibits........ Oh. And a huge, maybe the biggest each year, bourse.
Here is a link to the ANA WFOM program:
This will be my second Summer ANA on the dealer side of the table. Last year it was non-stop activity at my table for 10 hours each day. I barely had time to eat some nuts for lunch and drink some water. Two of the days, I ended up fasting as there was never a minute to grab the nuts out of my container in my bag. This year there was some concern that the show would be ‘slower’ because it is located not at a hub airport city but a secondary city – Oklahoma City.
However, observing the bourse floor map:
Shows that all bourse tables except 3 are sold. That is well over 300 tables occupied, albeit several vendors/dealers occupy several tables into one extended larger space, but multiple dealers occupy single spaces as well, so it pretty much evens out – i.e. 100s of dealers to visit. I only know of 2 key classic US dealers that decided not to come. The challenge could be travel. For example, I have a full day of travel each way – connecting through a hub airport then on to OKC. That makes it a tough hall, Rosemont was a direct flight to O’Hare last year. So now that it is a full house of dealers, we will see how the collector attendance goes.
In either case, there will be many amazing coins to view on the bourse, lot viewing in the auction house rooms, and with every other activity at the show. And the amount of numismatic learning to be had is exponential compared to just about any other show. If you attend, please stop by my table to say hello, our table number is #1116.
I have spent the week in prep for the show. This means going through all inventory I will have on hand, and revisiting pricing for each one. So for over 100 coins this takes a few days. I will have all of the coins now presented on our website. I will also have at least 30 coins not listed on the website including some newps that arrived this week that are all just really cool coins. I will also be presenting items in 2 areas that don’t make the website – tokens, and mid-grade Barber Quarters.
For the tokens, I will have 10 to offer - Hard Times tokens and Store Cards from the 1850s, including a gorgeous example of the well-known “Am I Not A Woman” Hard Times token.
For the Barber Quarters, I put together a set of CACed VF to XF (none of the big 3) examples over the past decade. I wanted to teach myself what an original Barber Quarter should look like in these grades. I had some excellent instruction from a well-known numismatist who had studied Barbers extensively and then began shopping. All of them were bought with no-CAC stickers, and about 90% of them CACed. These were bought mostly when CAC was only charging $10 for stickering consideration and as a collector, they did not charge me for the examples that failed. Now, with the cost at $24.50, not a complete waiver of charges for failures (only a 15% cost reduction), and combining shipping, the cost becomes prohibitive to send in coins valued less than $400 or so. So many of these are a population of 1 at CAC for the grade, and within the range of VF to XF for each example, there may be a few, there may not be. And the chances of increasing populations within these grade ranges is minimal given the cost to sticker. Hence these gorgeous and worn Barber Quarters are special. About 20 of them will be at my table at ANA.
I will not be offering newps listed on the website with this issue since it is so close to ANA and I would be unable to ship until late August. However, the following week after ANA I have some of these imaged and ready to go, I just need to push the button on the website. I have many new examples that are cool like the 1893-O Barber Quarter above. These range from copper to silver to gold examples, including a 67+/CAC commem that is drop dead gorgeous but not imaged yet. Again, if you come to ANA, please stop by my table (#1116) and have a look.
Please email us at desertmoonnm@yahoo.com if you are interested in any of our offerings.
Thanks for reading!
