1859-D Half Eagle, PCGS AU55
This is one of 3 newly listed Dahlonega Liberty Half Eagles we are offering. It is an 1859-D in PCGS AU55/CAC. This is the Medium D variety. Please see our Cool Coin Showcase just posted on these legendary D-Mint gold half eagles.
While any Dahlonega half eagle is considered rare, an 1859-D, can be considered, err, even more rare? Just 10,366 of these were minted. Of the Medium D's, CAC has stickered/holdered just 33 total and none in the even more rare, Large D variety. In AU55 there are 9, with 7 in AU 58, and only 1 in MS62 and 1 in 63. No other examples have met CAC expectations in MS, and just 4 others in lower AU grades, so this AU55 example is pretty darn hard to come by.
This Dahlonega example is fairly well struck from the dentils, stars and to the devices (slight weakness in the 1rst 4 starts and the centers of the devices as normal), showing just a touch of wear and no major detractions, that meets the high expectations of CAC. The toning is lighter-orange, luster is satiny, with cartwheels coming out while rotating under the light. Winter notes that many of these were harmed by overzealous cleaning, hence the current CAC numbers are likely not to change much with time.
This coin is approved by CAC.
