1911 Strong D Quarter Eagle, AU55
We love coins with a story. This key date 1911 Strong D Indian Quarter Eagle in AU55 has one. This example was found in the melting pot at a metal processing foundry in Minnesota. The person that sold it to me works there and he always goes through the gold before moving it on for melting. When his eye spied this lovely Indian QE he pulled it out and not only did it look pristine to him, he was stunned to find it was the key 11-D. He sent it on to PCGS and then CAC and this is the result. Wow!
This lovely example has the patina with hints of dirt in recessed areas, of an AU gold piece that has been sitting in storage somewhere for many decades. Underneath the patina is a nice subtle luster when viewed under the light that gives it the 'sparkle' we see on original, un messed with old gold. No major detractions, minor wear, what a wonderful coin.
How the heck did it end up at this foundry? One can imagine multiple scenarios, including relatives of a collector selling it for melt who had no idea it was the big key..................
