1898-O Barber Quarter, PCGS MS64
This is one of those 'wow' coins at first look. This 1898-O better date Barber Quarter is in a PCGS MS64 Holder. Have a look at the images. The first two are standard images with the lights at different angles to show how the luster rotates through nicely under the light. The third is the lights right over the coin as one can see, but it highlights to burst of color. This is one way that PCGS got their glam shots in the old days, but they imaged their coins raw and did not have the light reflection off of the plastic as here. Nevertheless it provides a view that maxes out the stunning toning on the surfaces. The colors are a classic progression from deep aqua blue on the edges, grading into amber and finally steel as one progresses to the center of each side. To say that this coin gushes eye appeal is an understatement.
Only 58 examples have been accepted to CAC/CACG of this O-Mint 1898. There are 10 in MS64, 0 in 65 and 3 in 66. Prices scale up by 2.2 times from 64 to 65, and the next available coin in 66, is 5.1 times the price of the 64 in the CAC CPG Retail guide. Hence the occaisional offering of a 64 that has this level if eye appeal, is true value.
