1890 Half, PCGS Pr64+
The Liberty Seated Proof half dollars were made in limited quantity. Only 590 examples of the 1890 were made in proof and perhaps 500 survive to date. When carefully stored for 134 years they develop stunning colors like the present example. The first image was shot with axial lighting to bring out the colors on the mirrors of the surfaces. The second shot is the same but with a 'glamourous' presentation because well, this is such a pretty coin and deserves to be seen in its best light. The third shot is with direct lighting next to the camera lens. So like all proofs, colors and surfaces are shown differently depending on the lighting used. This is the only 1890 that PCGS gives the + grade to at 64 and one has to wonder why it is not in a 65 holder because we think it should be.
