1854-D Half Eagle, PCGS AU58
This is one of 3 newly listed Dahlonega Liberty Half Eagles we are offering. It is an 1854-D in PCGS AU58/CAC. It is from the Fairmont Hoard from Stacks. Please see our Cool Coin Showcase just posted on these legendary D-Mint gold half eagles.
This example is the Large D variety, where CAC has stickered/holdered 57 total. In AU 58 there are 16, 2 in MS62, 1 in MS62, and 1 in MS64. It has the distinctive look that characterizes most of the examples of this date - well struck devices and weak dentils. Doug Winter notes that he knows of a dozen or so that have very faint mintmarks, and some that appear to have been exposed to seawater. These characteristics are not present in the example we are offering here. Winter also notes that this date can have some of the most eye-appealing color where original - this one has the striking and richly-toned Fairmont look of butterscotch to greenish gold. Clearly a coin that has not been messed with to 'enhance', and a gorgeous Dahlonega example with just a touch of wear and no major detractions, that meets the high expectations of CAC.
This coin is approved by CAC.
