1852-D Half Eagle, PCGS AU58
This is one of 3 newly listed Dahlonega Liberty Half Eagles we are offering. It is an 1852-D in PCGS AU58/CAC. It is from the Fairmont Hoard from Stacks. Please see our Cool Coin Showcase just posted on these legendary D-Mint gold half eagles.
This example is the 32-V variety of Winter. CAC has stickered/holdered 78 total. In AU 58 there are 10, and only 3 in MS62. No other examples have met CAC expectations in MS, so this AU58 example is near the top of the condition census.
Clearly a coin that has not been messed with to 'enhance', and a gorgeous Dahlonega example with just a touch of wear and no major detractions, that meets the high expectations of CAC. The luster is silky, with cartwheels coming out while rotating under the light. Winter notes that most of the 1852-D half eagles are heavily abraded, and many of these also have prominent scratches in their fields. This example has far less of these detractions than most of them with richly toned orange-gold surfaces. It is likely that it was preserved in this manner by sitting in the Fairmont Hoard somewhere for decades.
This coin is approved by CAC.
