1850-O Quater Eagle, PCGS AU58
This Pre-Civil War, New Orleans gold quarter eagle is not easy to obtain. Doug Winter estimates 250-350 extant, where it ranks 7th of 14 in rarity amongst O-mint quarter eagles. CAC/CACG has stickered/certified 50, including 19 in AU58 and 10 in all MS grades. Winter notes that a 'few' of this issue have 'reflective' surfaces as this one appears to reflect. Winter also notes that this is among the toughest date of O-Mint quarter eagles to find with a strong strike and limited abrasions. This example is far better than most, having primarily just a touch of weakness on the feathers below the shield on the reverse, weakness on the eagles neck, and Star 1 on the obverse. Many examples show much more strike weakness, such as minimal definition on the horizontal shield lines, no feathers on the neck of the eagle, and weakness in the curls in Miss Liberty's hair below the ear. We interpret the combination of reflective fields and better strike on this example to mean it was likely an earlier strike during the mint run.
To sum, this is a great looking and rare O-Mint quarter eagle.
