1846-O Quarter Eagle, CACG AU58
Here is an 1846-O Quarter Eagle in CACG AU58. Lovely golden surfaces and soft and frosty luster when rotating under the light. Like many of the New Orleans Pre-Civil War Quarter Eagles, this issue was poorly stuck such that the devices are lacking and weakness along the peripheries is also common. This example is better than most in having no weakness on the peripheries and more definition of Ms. Liberty than usual. Out of 14 O-Mint Quarter Eagles, the 1846 is the 6th in rarity with an estimated 175-225 extant according to Doug Winter. CAC/CACG has beaned/graded only 51. Hence hard to find with original surfaces worthy of CAC. In MS61 the CPG price jumps to $9500 and only 2 are available in that are CACed, so AU58 represents a sweet spot in grade when they can be found.
