1837 Quarter Eagle, CACG XF45
This lovely Classic Head Quarter Eagle is a tougher to find 1837 in XF45. Very even wear across the surfaces on both sides and the color is graditional from a golden to deeper russet-orange from middle to edges. Very wholesome, eye appealing XF gold and this is the type of toning one would expect for worn gold that has not been dipped or strongly cleaned. As noted on the slab, it is pedigreed to John McCloskey, one of the preeminent early US coin researchers. In fact, he wrote the first book on die varieties for this series and this coin was likely used for that study. This is die variety HM-1, which is considered to be R3. CACG is very strict for gold, so even XF's are hard to come at this level of quality.
