1828 Dime, Large Planchet, CACG AU58
The 1828 Capped Bust Dime is extremely rare in AU or MS grades. There are 2 die marriages/varieties. This one is the JR2, large planchet variety, the other one is the JR1 small planchet. The JR2 is much less available than the JR1. During the 1828 dime minting run, they changed from a larger planchet size to the smaller one that then lasted to the end of the series in 1837. Hence 2 different-sized planchets in the same year, both needed for a Red Book variety set and any other bust dime set one puts together. But extremely difficult to find in gem AU on up.
At PCGS there is 1 at AU58+ and 2 at AU58. This example at AU58 was in a PCGS AU58 holder (we bought in the CACG holder) and it still shows up on Coinfacts Images for the variety, so it is 1 of the 2 on the PCGS census. Beyond that there is 1 at MS61, 2 at MS62, 1 at MS63. This testifies to how hard these are to find in the better grades.
To get one approved by CAC/CACG is even more difficult. The PCGS AU58+ example is stickered. The example we are offering here is in a CACG holder now, and none of the examples in MS61-63, and 3 examples at MS64, have been approved by CAC. The AU58+ (which also shows up on the PCGS Coinfacts Images page) was recently placed in a private sale for strong MS money, so to obtain a quality CAC example for less than the $29,000 price of an MS64, our offered example here is likely the only one in gem AU that will be available for quite some time.
This example has a rich deep navy blue, olive, and amber patina covering both sides, with silky luster when rotating under the light, testifying to its originality and meeting the strict requirements at CAC/CACG.
