1823 Capped Bust Half, PCGS MS64
Here is 1823 Capped Bust Half in PCGS MS64. It is die marriage O-111a. This coin was previously owned by Chuck Link and the pedigree is on the slab. Why is the Link Pedigree appealing? Two reasons. First, Chuck is an aficionado of early US bust coinage and puts together date and die marriage sets of the finest possible grades he can find. So this coin came from his capped bust die marriage set and as all his coins are simply gorgeous. Second, as a scientist, Chuck has done some very important work for humanity. One of his companies developed the vaccine for the Ebola virus, which is a plague that has killed untold amounts of people in Africa and if it ever got out across the world, would make the Covid epidemic look minor. How many lives this vaccine has already saved, is well, many. To have a coin from someone who has done such good, is an honor. I (DM) am lucky to know Chuck from interactions at coin shows. We talk science, but my breakthroughs in Earth sciences are not at the same level as what Chuck has done for human health.
Irrespective of the Link Pedigree and what it means, let’s talk about the coin itself. The coin has a deep navy blue, aqua, and sea green tone on each side that grades into lighter amber from edge to center. The devices still have some frost, and the luster booms out under the light as one expects from choice MS64 coin. Interestingly, Miss Liberty has a double profile that can be observed from neck to chin to nose, and past the eye, that is sometimes displayed by mid-1820s bust halves. No detracting marks, and original as fresh squeezed orange juice. Just a great coin!
Prices jump above $10K for MS65 so an MS64 with such qualities represents strong value.
