1821 Quarter, PCGS VF20
We sold 53 Bust Quarters that were in our possession since starting Desert Moon Numismatics in April, 2024. Most of them were CAC, which are very hard to come by. Since this original starting inventory, we have acquired no new bust quarters. Until now. We are pleased to have acquired 5 Large-Size Capped Bust Quarter newps at the ANA WFOM. Two sold within 5-15 minutes of acquisition. The other 3 are now here on our list. This is the third one, an 1821 in VF20. It is the B5 die marriage and is considered to be R4+. This means there are estimated to be 76-116 known of this die marriage. There are 120, 1821 Bust Quarters that are CAC/CACG for the B1 to B6 (six) die marriages, meaning a few to maybe 20-30 for each marriage depending on its rarity and likely even less for this B5 marriage (10-ish? max). In VF20-25, there are 13 total 1821 quarters that are CACed. This is the only one attributed to B5, but it is possible there might be 1 or 2 more.
Unlike the B3 and B4 discussed for the other 1821 quarter offered here, there is only 1 marriage of the 2 dies to make the B5. So apparently something happened to the dies because this is the only time they were used, only to make this die marriage, and never again.
This example has uber eye appeal for a VF coin that occurs only infrequently for Large Capped Bust Quarters. In particular it exhibits a menagerie of vibrant colors on both the obverse and reverse. In our 12 years of experience with bust quarters, we see this exhibition of toning other than grey far less than 1% of the time within the VF-XF range. Hence a rare die marriage with rare colorful toning equals an extremely distinctive coin.
This coin is approved by CAC.
