1820 Large Cent, PCGS MS65+RB
This lovely large cent was my last newly bought coin at CSNS while I was essentially running out the door to catch a taxi to the airport. I caught a gleam in my eye and had to stop and take a look. And then buy. It is the N-13 die marriage that was one of the large cent die marriages of the Randall Hoard which the first reference found is an 1870 letter discovered by QD Bowers. Named after John Swan Randall, who offered the large cents first and suggested they were found in a barrel under a railroad platform in Georgia.
This example has lotsa red with an overlying original brown patina. The flashy luster and no major hits is a stand out amongst its gem peers, which is why PCGS designated it with the Plus grade that indicates it is at the top of the list in pq MS65 and oh so close to MS66. Extremely well struck with the obverse die break in the stars that is specific to this die marriage and is thus easily identified as a Randall Hoard coin.
This coin is approved by CAC.
