The Big Show Report
Hi Folks,
The ANA WFOM is done. As you have likely already read elsewhere, the perception was that it was collector ‘lite’. Most of the major dealers of early US coins were there. The collectors that did attend, and at least on Tuesday through Thursday, were buying. Friday started to be very slow, like all the big shows I have had a table at. I believe there were as many folks on the floor, but the crowd did not appear to be in the same buying mood as those earlier. You can read my day-by-day show reports and the discussions around them here:
I sold more than any of the previous 4 shows I set up for. Some were repeat buyers which is great. I am now starting to see the process evolution that occurs with time as I transition into becoming a dealer. More people are aware of my website and table at the big 3 shows (CSNS, FUN winter, ANA summer). This is all good but I want to stay small so I will see where my level goes.
The biggest challenge going forward will be travel. The ANA continues to schedule many of their future shows in places where only a minimal percentage of attendees will have either a short drive or a direct flight. We have been told that they feel the need to have shows in all kinds of different locations to benefit club members (or something like that). To me it seems the best benefit they can have is the easiest access to their show via travel. So that really limits it to just a few HUB airport cities around the US. They also charge table fees that far exceed the other big shows, so to justify paying them, the dealers have to make proportionally more sales (and buys for inventory) as well. That is especially true for the smaller throughput dealers such as myself. I think everyone is thinking of what the show would have been if it were in Rosemont, IL – more collectors? Higher resultant activity? Well at least easier travel. I spent all day Monday and Saturday travelling because of connecting flights, etc. Other dealers came in earlier so 6 or more days, pretty much 14 hour days, of work. So we will see if ANA continues to be the big one each year. It could be that someone else thinking more about how to solve these issues may supplant ANA WFOM over time. We will see.
In either case, I picked up a lot of NEWPS, all really cool coins and will begin to list them on this website. Three images of the 6 newly listed are shown here (1 above, 2 below), and of course you can view the rest of them with all of our other offerings at desertmoonnm.com.
Please email us at desertmoonnm@yahoo.com if you are interested in any of our offerings.
Thanks for reading!
Best, DM
